Farm Manager

About Farmshare Austin:

Farmshare is a non-profit located on a 10-acre organic farm in Eastern Travis County. Our mission is to grow a healthy local food community by teaching new farmers, increasing food access and preserving farm land. We are small but mighty with ambitious programs in place to meet our mission. This includes Fresh for Less Mobile Markets to increase food access, Farmer Starter to teach the next generation of Central Texas farmers, and Farmshare Land Link to preserve farmland by connecting landowners with new farmers seeking land.

Job Description:

  • Manage 3 acre organic farm in accordance with Farmshare’s mission. Tasks include:

    • Create and update yearly farm plan.

    • Manage cultivation and tillage work.

    • Manage planting and greenhouse work.

    • Manage harvest and post harvest activities, including sales.

    • Purchase seeds and farm supplies.

    • Maintain all farm equipment.

    • Maintain all necessary records for certifications and farm history.

  • Maintain regular and open communication with all staff on farm activities, farm plan, harvest schedule and notable changes.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment and follow established procedures and policies when accidents occur.

  • Manage and mentor Assistant Farm Manager (Farm Apprentice).

  • Manage students and volunteers in the fields to ensure a continuing educational environment and the attainment of necessary field experience.

  • Work with Education Director to align field work with classroom curriculum. Carry out and instruct fieldwork portion of curriculum with students daily.

  • Assist with or oversee upkeep and landscaping of property to create an inviting space for students, volunteers and staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements: Education, Experience, and Skills

  • 2-3 years of organic fruit and vegetable production on 3+ acre scale with prior farm management experience

  • Understanding of sustainable agricultural principles such as: whole farm planning, crop rotations, permaculture principles, cultural management of perennial crops and tree fruit, regenerative farming concepts, cover cropping, soil and plant sciences, and holistic management

  • Experience running and maintaining vehicles, equipment, and greenhouses, coolers, and irrigation

  • Strong communication, organizational, and computer skills

  • Self-starter, self-motivated, and able to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Ability to communicate cordially, professionally, and effectively with external audiences

  • Able to comport oneself in a way that always reflects well on the organization

Preferred: Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 1+ years teaching

  • Experience farming in Central Texas

  • Experience with organic certification process/record-keeping requirements

  • Experience in marketing and produce sales

Salary:

$36,000 - $39,000/year
