Mobile Market Substitute Coordinator 

Farmshare Austin has a mission to grow a healthy local food community by increasing food access, teaching new farmers and preserving farmland.

 

The Mobile Market Substitute Coordinator will be responsible for implementing the Mobile Market Program with Farmshare Austin and the City of Austin/Travis County Health Department. The goal of this program is to provide fresh, seasonal produce at accessible prices at identified sites in local food deserts. The mobile markets serve a diverse population, including a significant portion of Spanish-only speaking customers.

 
The Mobile Market Substitute Coordinator will operate a variety of mobile markets and complete all tasks relating to market operation, including driving the van, setting up the site, making and accurately recording sales, post-market reporting, and gathering customer and community feedback.


The Mobile Market Substitute Coordinator will not be expected to attend regular staff meetings or handle other administrative/organizational tasks. The position currently does not have a set number of hours and instead is on an as-needed and as-available basis. However, depending on the availability of the Mobile Market Substitute Coordinator, there will be the opportunity for the employee to take on one regularly occurring weekly market if desired in addition to occasional market subbing. The Mobile Market Substitute Coordinator role is an hourly position as a Farmshare Austin employee.


The Mobile Market Substitute Coordinator will be expected to have exceptionally strong and responsive communication skills, since market subbing needs may be time-sensitive.

 

Shifts vary and are generally 5-6 hours in length. Mobile Markets operate between 9am and 7pm, Tuesdays-Sundays.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Mobile market operation including preparing for markets, driving to market sites, setting up the market, maintaining a safe and comfortable shopping environment, communicating with customers, promoting fresh produce, completing transactions, reporting sales, and leaving sites in a clean and respectful condition.     

Requirements: Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Highly trustworthy and responsible

  • Able to manage cash, credit, and SNAP transactions

  • High School or equivalent completion

  • Fluent in Spanish

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Passion for food access and building an equitable local food system

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Strong communication and organizational skills

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Ability to communicate cordially, professionally, and effectively with the public

 

Preferred: Education, Experience, and Skill

  • Solution-oriented and quick to learn new skills and concepts

  • Retail experience or experience in marketing and produce sales

  • Educational or professional experience with non-profit organizations

  • Educational or professional experience in food access, food justice, hunger alleviation, and/or community development

  • Experience with and sensitivity to working with ethnically, culturally, and socio-economically diverse groups

 

Pay for this position is $15/hr plus a $25 market stipend per market worked.
